    Starting with a 4' length of 1/4" round stock, heat one end and forge a gradual taper to a fairly fine point. Round it up, then over the far edge of the anvil, begin a tight scroll of the point. While still hot, over the tip of the horn, give it a curl 90 degrees to the first tight curl with an approximate inside diameter of 1". (Fig. 7 a&b) Have the mandrel clamped tightly in the leg vise with the handle facing in whichever direction you need to give you either a right or left-handed coil in the finished product, as you see fit.
