Forging a Snail End

This is an easy end for a round or square bar instead of the perennial taper.


Fig. 1  Bend about an inch at 90º over the edge of the anvil.

Fig. 4  Roll up the end as far as you wish.

Fig. 5  Flatten slightly when the curl is finished.

It sort of looks like a stepped on snail when finished, so that’s what I call it, a Snail End.  It can be used for hook ends to fire tool handle ends in whatever size stock you use.
