Page 7 of 7 What's Happening Now? How did I quit smithing, you ask?
Me and my family, at the 2001 Stronghold Festival Simple, I work full time for one of America's largest and most prestigious medical centers. By profession, I am a Medical Technologist and possess a college degree, several certifications and a whole bunch of letters behind my name. That has always provided me with a dependable income and a stable job. Metal work has been more of a vocation, something I love dearly and choose to pursue as a means to express myself. I have been encouraged by many friends and associates to pursue metal work as a full time profession, but I have never had the courage to "quit my day-job" and take such a risk. With the arrival of my daughter, I eliminated such a possibility from consideration.
Instead, I have decided to make what I want, when I have the time available. My latest artistic pursuit has been scrap metal clocks. I set up at one show a year (currently) and if someone likes what I have made and chooses to buy it, I am grateful and flattered.
When invited to do so, I teach a few workshops on various topics. Most recently I have taught a class on knifemaking basics at the "Howard Academy of the Metal Arts" and hope to return there soon to teach a few more workshops.
With so many changes, including the joy of playing with my daughter, I have stuck a balance between my artistic, professional and personal lives. This website is merely another way of expressing myself and getting an opportunity to show my work.
