I was born and raised on the south side of the great city of Chicago, IL. I grew up in a blue-collar neighborhood, living with an extended family that included my mother, grandparents and great-grandparents. My mother still lives in house I grew-up in. Just within the shadow of Chicago's Midway Airport.

As a kid, I had a great love for the theatre, magic, and juggling. I worked at the local theatres on the lighting and sound crews, built special effects and enjoyed taking the usual high-school industrial arts classes. Like every kid, I was fascinated with knives and made my first knife, from a kit, somewhere around 1979. It was a skinner pattern with black walnut handle scales. Looking at it now, I think it is just awful! It was, however, a perfect way to start.
