An "S-Hook" is one of the basic projects that many aspiring blacksmiths start with. It includes several basic techniques and is a good over-all exercise. The techniques used in this exercise include:

  1. Drawing A Point

  2. Forging A Simple Scroll

  3. Forming Matching Bends

  4. Making A Simple Twist

The stock size used for this exercise was a piece of 1/4" thick by 15" long square mild steel (1018) bar. To Start, heat the last one or two inches of the bar to a full red or orange heat.
