Rotate the bar 180 degrees, so that the open part of the "C" is facing up. Use the hammer to close up the "C". Use the hammer blows to direct the shape of the scroll as it closes.
Tighten the scroll as need by rotating the bar 180 degrees and hanging the scroll off the edge of the anvil. Strike the far end of the scroll between the hammer and the anvil's edge. With a little practice you can exert a great deal of control over the shape of the scroll.
A Quicktime Movie® of this operation is available for download and clearly demonstrates the process. The footage is taken from my video, "The Renaissance Blacksmith," which is available for order elsewhere on this site. (scroll.mov - approx. 1.5meg . The movie will load into its own browser window so that you may continue with the lesson)
