North Texas Blacksmiths Association is an ABANA chapter formed to help spread the knowledge of the blacksmithing craft. The organization is located in the North Central Texas area, although people from all areas are welcomed to join. Membership fee is $15. NTBA gladly accepts invitations to demonstrate the craft of blacksmithing at public events. To schedule a demo contact NTBA.

January 10 - Lanny Powers, Mesquite Shop, Powers Spray Equipment Co, 2414 US Highway 80 E # 260, Mesquite, TX 75149, 972-289-3113. Directions – From downtown Dallas, take Hwy 80 east about 8.5 miles and exit at Gus Thomasson/Gross Road. Travel on the access road to Lanny’s shop. The shop is on the south side of Hwy 80. From LBJ/I635 in Mesquite, exit at Hwy 80 westbound. Exit at Gus Thomasson, travel south and loop behind Lanny Powers shop to the Hwy 80 entrance. Scheduled is the NTBA officers election.

February 14 - The Master Forge, Chuck Stone, Newark, 389 CR 4853, Newark, TX 76071, <mastersforge@prodigy.net>, (817) 489-3580. Directions – Newark is approximately 20 miles northwest of Ft Worth. From Fort Worth take I-35W towards Denton, then take Hwy 287 towards Decatur, in about 5 miles take Hwy 718 to Newark (there is a Texaco at the stop sign, go West on Hwy 718), in about 5-6 miles at the Fina station and four-way stop sign, continue west on Hwy 718 for another couple of miles. Look for the Newark Feed Store on the right, then take the next left at CR 4850, over RR tracks, veer right, go 1/4 mile, left at the 'T' (CR 4853), 1st driveway on left.

March 14 - Tentative - Collin County Farm Museum, McKinney, 7117 County Road 166  McKinney, TX 75071. http://www.co.collin.tx.us/parks/myers/farm_museum.jsp. Map - http://www.co.collin.tx.us/parks/myers/MyersCC.pdf. Scheduled is forging of farm tools. Some suggestions are forging of plow points, metal hardware for harness, sickles, gate latches, hoes, horse shoes, adzes, broad axes, large needles for sewing sacks, hinges, door knockers, shutter dogs, pokers, tongs, shovels, andirons, cranes, pot hooks, jam hooks, nails, and cowbell, sharpening all sorts of tools, such as shovels, axes, etc.

April 11 - Anvil Repair Workshop, Frank Shelton's shop, Princeton. This workshop will be for members to bring their own anvil(s) to repair themselves, but with assistance of experienced repair people. An anvil with damage such as minor chips on the face or other major face and horn damage is a good project to bring. This is anvil repair at your own risk.

Directions - From Fort Worth take I35 north to Denton then 380 west to Decatur, turn north on 287. (You may also take 287 from Fort Worth to Decatur) In Decatur, take 287 about 5 miles north and you will see “Cow Camp” restaurant on the right hand side. Turn left onto CR 1180 and go 1.3 mile.  Turn right onto CR 1270 and go 3.4 miles (you will see Oakhill MX part on the right hand side in about 3 miles).  Turn right on CR 1370 and go .6 mile until you see an old stone house on the left hand side.  The shop is in back of the old stone house. James will demonstrate the basics of power hammer forging and use of dies to create unique textures.

For any information about NTBA please email us at dwwilson@flash.net. NTBA has meetings on the second Saturday of each month, (with occasional exceptions). Monthly meetings are located at members shops and other locations such as farm museums in the North central Texas area. Meeting topics and directions are in the club newsletter. Hours are normally from 9 am until 3 pm, however, multi-day events such as IronFest, Hammerfest and Dancing Hammers are weekdays 9 am - 5 pm and Sunday 9 am - noon. Demos are given by club members and guests, and newcomers are invited to participate.
